Sonic the Hedgehog
So at the start of the film, Sonic the Hedgehog has been living on Earth because he had to leave his home planet. He got to Earth by using golden rings that open up portals. Before that, he was raised by an owl on his planet that he described as being like Obi-Wan Kenobi, if he had a beak and feathers (and yes, this is the first pop culture reference in this film). He was told if he gets caught on planet earth that he will have to leave to go to a planet filled with mushrooms. One day, he released too much lightning while using his speed, which caused a black out. The government notices and sends in Dr. Ivo Robotnik (who is played by Jim Carrey) to discover what caused the black out. Sonic takes his bag of rings, goes into a shed, he gets one of the rings out…and then a man comes in with a tranquilizer gun to check what the noise is. He sees Sonic and they both scream before he shoots Sonic in the knee. As Sonic falls unconscious he notices the guy was wearing a San Francisco shirt and the ring he drops opens a portal to San Francisco, his bag filled with other rings falling through the portal onto a tall building… So the plot of the film is Sonic and the guy, who is a cop, go on a road trip to get his rings back while being hunted down by Dr. Robotnik.
The movie is funny for several reasons. First off, Jim Carrey is goofy and funny. His performance in this movie reminds me of his previous movies like The Mask or Batman Forever. And this movie has tons of references that will please Sonic fans, including two mid-/post-credit scenes. The first one shows Dr. Robotnik on the mushroom planet, now wearing his iconic red outfit, his hair has been shaved off, and he has his signature big mustache and goggles. The second scene shows Sonic’s friend Tails. Another reference in this movie is in one scene where Sonic falls off a building, his gold rings fall everywhere, and he picks them up. Now if you’re a true fan of Sonic, you will know that in the games, when you get hurt the rings you picked up fall everywhere and you have to pick them up again. Also, Dr Robotnik isn’t a fan of humans and prefers robots, not to mention Sonic calls him Dr. Eggman near the end of the film. Lastly, for some odd reason, this movie has quite a few jokes about Olive Garden. For example, at the end of the film, a guy from the military gives our main human characters a gift card to the Olive Garden, remarking “have you tried their never ending pasta bowl? It’s endless.”
Overall I give this movie a 9/10. I highly recommend it.
