A WEEKLY TORAH THOUGHT BY RABBI MORDY
This week’s Parsha, Vayeilech, brings us one week closer to the completion of the Torah. It also is the Parsha that always falls out around Yom Kippur (this coming Wednesday night and Thursday); often, it is read together with last week’s Parsha, Netzavim. There is something interesting in the names of both Parshas. Parshas Netzavim, as you may recall from last week, means to stand firmly. The word “Vayeilech” means, “And he went.” We can learn something so pertinent to this time of year! First and foremost, we need to stand firm. We need to create the proper foundation for the year to come and ensure that we are well-grounded. And only then can we “go.” As we ready ourselves for Yom Kippur, full of inspiration from Rosh Hashanah, let us remember the point of it all: We must get going. Why? Because G-d has given us much work to be done and precious little time to do it. So while it may be tempting to so stand firm, resolute in our commitment, our real job is to take the reins and venture on. And may these preparations lead us to a happy, healthy, sweet (and productive!) New Year! Good Shabbos!
